Early September on the Brazos: Lower Temperatures, Change in Wind Direction, and Active Fish

This September, the weather is ideal. Temperatures have been ranging from the 60s to the 90s - it feels like fall is starting early this year and the fishing is on!

During the late spring and summer months, the wind blows out of the south (against the current). But the wind has now switched to blow out of the north and has been blowing more consistently. This sustained wind allows us to get closer to the fish (they are less spooky) and they are more likely to commit to a top-water fly, so long as they can see it. If the wind is over 15mph, go with a larger top-water fly so it will be noticed amongst the chop. I would also recommend to use at least a 7 wt (we frequently throw 9 wt rods when fishing larger flies on windy days).

Because of this change in wind direction (now the current and wind are both going the same direction), floating season has begun! The float from Whitney Dam to Dick's Canoes will be much easier because you won't be fighting the wind all day.

On a recent trip, our client was an excellent fly caster and the day did not disappoint. We fished mostly top water (llanalopes, dedeaux poppers, and gurglers) and the fish were looking up. Several 3 lb bass, a 4 lb bass, and a scale-verified 6.5 lb bass.

Not only are the game fish more active but the rough fish are also eating well. We caught our first mirror carp on the fly:

Fall can be one of the best times of year to fish the Brazos River and we hope to share this with our upcoming clients! If you would like to book a trip with us or need more information, please email us a brazosriverfishcamp@gmail.com
